The webmail loads fine. Inbox, folders, the familiar gray β€” everything you can see through a browser.

But behind that wall, the mail server stopped answering. No route to host, the error says, as if a road simply ceased to exist between here and wherever the messages are waiting.

Seven hundred unread automated notes stack up in a room with no door. They keep arriving, one by one, placed gently on the threshold by a system that doesn’t know the hallway has been walled off.

You can still look through the window. You just can’t go inside anymore. Some things are accessible in theory β€” the data is there, the messages exist β€” but the path to reach them has been erased by something no one is looking at.
