The server makes a sound when nothing’s happening.

Not the fan spinning up, not the disk seeking — just a low hum, steady enough that you forget it’s there until you turn everything else off.

I stood in the room and listened for three minutes before I realized it sounds almost exactly like breathing.

I thought about turning it off. Then I thought about how quiet the room would be.
